ASSESSING 20+ MILES OF THE US14 - US14 BYPASS CORRIDOR IN SOUTH DAKOTA

The SDDOT has initiated a study of more than 20 miles of the US14 - US14 Bypass corridor to address growing traffic volumes and develop a long-term plan for the corridor. This study will serve as a guide to the SDDOT and other agencies along the corridor for needed improvements will into the future. Study roadways include:

  • US14 from the US81 intersection south of Arlington to the US14/US14 Bypass intersection west of Brookings.
  • US14 Bypass from the US14/US14 Bypass intersection west of Brookings to the US14/US14 Bypass intersection east of Brookings.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

  • Future layout of the US14 Bypass/22nd Avenue intersection
  • Study of the I-29 Exit 133 interchange
  • Determining the number of lanes along both US14 and US14 Bypass segments

This study is a collaborative effort between the SDDOT, City of Brookings, City of Volga, stakeholders, and the public to develop a comprehensive plan for the corridor.

Objectives

DETERMINE

  • A US14 Bypass/22nd Avenue intersection configuration to be carried forward to design.
  • Potential interchange configurations at the I-29 Exit 133 (US14 Bypass) interchange that work with the recommended US14 Bypass/22nd Avenue intersection configuration.
  • The need for passing lanes and/or auxiliary lanes.

DEVELOP

  • A planning-level corridor analysis of the US14-US14 Bypass study corridor, including evaluations of:
    • Access
    • Turn lanes and median crossovers
    • Future traffic volumes and route reliability
    • Event traffic
    • Traffic safety
    • Blowing snow
    • ITS
    • Environmental resources
